A good lawn doesn't just happen - it gets built from the ground up. That's exactly what's going on here. Before a single roll of sod ever touches the ground, the prep work has to be done right. Skipping that step is how you end up with uneven turf, poor drainage, and a yard that never quite looks the way it should.

Here's what we were working with - a large sloped back yard behind a newer home that needed full grading and soil prep before sod could go down. The terrain had to be shaped and smoothed to give the turf a solid, level base to root into. That kind of groundwork takes time, but it's what separates a lawn that looks great for a season from one that actually lasts.

We took the whole area down to fresh soil and graded it out carefully along the slope. The goal was a clean, consistent surface with no low spots or rough patches. Getting the grade right also matters for drainage - water needs to move away from the structure, not pool up and cause problems later.

Once the sod goes in over a properly prepped surface like this, the results speak for themselves. The turf roots faster, fills in more evenly, and holds up better over time. Our sod installation process starts exactly like this every time - no shortcuts on the prep side.

Spring is one of the best windows to get this kind of work done. The ground is workable, growing conditions are strong, and new sod has the whole season ahead of it to establish. If your back yard is in rough shape or you're starting from scratch on a new build, this is the right time to get moving.
